We are delighted to announce that our first soil treatment hub has opened. Special guests were invited to tour our new facility that will divert thousands of tonnes of contaminated soils from landfills.
The ATG Treatment Hub at Moorfields Road, Ballymena, will allow us to remediate contaminated soil offsite for construction and earthworks projects. Treating the polluted earth reduces its waste classification. This allows it to be reused on site or sent to other sites that require additional soil for backfill.
Traditionally, contaminated soil is dug out of a site and sent to landfill. New fill material is then transported back on to the site, which is unsustainable and costly.
We offer remediation solutions that allow the soil to be treated and reused rather than dug out and dumped in landfills. With only the most heavily contaminated soil needing to be disposed of.
We have been treating contaminated soil onsite for clients for almost 20 years. But our first Treatment Hub means we can now offer our expertise in soil remediation to a wider customer base.
Why we’ve opened our soil treatment hub
Environmental Director Ciaran O’Neill explains, “Waste soil accounts for more than a quarter of the UK’s waste, according to official government figures. Soil is essential for life on Earth, yet its usability is increasingly threatened by contamination from pollutants. Much of this contaminated soil ends up in landfill, further reducing the availability of clean, usable material
“According to the International Soil Reference and Information Centre, soil is essential for mitigating climate change, serving as a major carbon sink. This highlights the need for sustainable practices during development projects to prevent valuable soil from being lost to landfill, preserving its ability to store carbon and maintain the balance of our natural environment.
“Our Treatment Hub will offer companies working on construction projects the ability to use our facility for a more sustainable solution.”
Our experience in soil remediation
Since 2017, our onsite remediation has diverted nearly 600,000 tonnes of material from landfills. This has significantly reduced our clients’ environmental impact. Our work has cut CO2 emissions by more than 11,700 tonnes. And it has eliminated the need for 1.5 million miles of haulage trips to landfill sites.
By offering sustainable alternatives to landfill, we’ve not only minimised environmental harm but also delivered substantial financial savings. Avoiding landfill tax and potentially costly hazardous waste disposal fees has saved our clients over £9 million since 2017.
Treatment Hub ‘an exciting development’
Managing Director and ATG Group Founder Dr Mark McKinney explained: “Onsite remediation is the most sustainable option to ensure soil is diverted from landfills. But some sites are too small for onsite remediation to be carried out.
“Additionally, on larger sites, there are often very tight timescales which may rule out the option of onsite remediation. ATG’s Treatment Hub provides a new alternative and means that we can help divert even more soil from landfills.
“It is an exciting development for ATG Group, and we were delighted to welcome so many people to the official opening of our new facility in Ballymena last week.”
