Belfast Grand Central Station officially opens its doors this weekend. Work on the transport hub for Translink started in 2020. That was when we helped get the project underway.
ATG Group was involved in remediating various areas of the site in the city. Using a range of different technologies, we were integral to the pre-construction works. We were commissioned to carry out the work by Graham Group.
The works included:
- Remediating multiple areas of contamination, which included the decommissioning of three underground storage tanks. The soils were then stabilised in conjunction with our design partners, Venterra Group, using our LockedIn® technology. The soils were retained on site for re-use.
- Removing Japanese knotweed from one location on site using our Eraginate® process. We installed a root barrier membrane on the boundary to protect the site against regrowth from any source offsite.
- Picking asbestos from fill materials. This significantly reduced the volume of material that was classed as hazardous waste.
Belfast Grand Central Station collaboration
ATG Group’s Environment Director, Ciaran O’Neill, says it was an honour to have played a part in the construction of this prestigious project.
“We were contracted by Graham Group to carry out various remediation projects on the site. This was required before the initial construction could take place. We enjoyed working with the design team at Venterra Group and our collaboration helped ensure the project started and was completed on time.”
“Works began during the Covid lockdown. But by working together safely and efficiently, we are delighted to have played our part in the stunning transport hub for Translink.”
Managing Director of the Design & Advisory Service Lines at Venterra Group, adds, “The success of the Grand Central Station project is a testament to the collaboration and dedication of the entire project team. From design to execution, every discipline worked seamlessly together to overcome challenges. We have helped deliver a landmark project that will serve Belfast for generations to come.”
A ‘game changer’ hub
Construction of the new station has been recognised as one of the most complex infrastructure projects in the UK this year.
Translink chief executive Chris Conway says, “This will really change the face of public transport. “It will bring enhanced frequency and connectivity right across Northern Ireland and give us the capability to do that both on our bus and rail network.
“It will also lead to increased connectivity between Belfast and Dublin with the new hourly Enterprise service coming in this autumn. And it will increase the ability to connect via bus as well between Belfast and Dublin.”
